ABOUT WHAT A PICTURE
Hannah and Bryan Loomis are a married couple in Tennessee, and they watch a lot of movies. When Sight and Sound released the results of their 2022 "Greatest Films of All Time" Critics' Poll, they realized that there were a lot of films on the list that they hadn't seen yet! And they figured, if they were going to watch all the movies, they may as well talk about them, and if they were going to talk about them, they may as well make you all listen. On the What a Picture podcast, Hannah and Bryan talk about a movie each week, usually from the Sight and Sound Top 100 list, and discuss what makes a great film great. New episodes are released every Wednesday.
The Sight and Sound "Greatest Films of All Time" Critics' Poll is released every ten years after an extensive survey of critics (in 2022, more than 1600 critics were invited to participate). Sight and Sound has been running its survey since 1952. The 2022 poll resulted in a new #1 film (Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles) and quite a bit of movement on the list, including seventeen films making the top 100 for the first time. The most represented directors are Alfred Hitchcock and Jean-Luc Godard with four films each, followed by Andrei Tarkovsky, Billy Wilder, and Stanley Kubrick with three films each.
